Body language of licking lips

Body language of licking lips: Just for a minute imagine you are sitting in a meeting and the question about the new project goes to Joe and all of the sudden he starts licking his lips. And you think “wow this is unusual I have never seen Joe lick his lips, what on earth does it mean is he lying or is he excited”?

Or

You ask your boyfriend where he was and all of the sudden all of his body language changes into something not normal. You see him say “I was with Steve” pause … pause … licking his lips  “and we went to a new bar” as he looks away. Could this be a sign and signal that your boyfriend is lying or did he really go to the new bar?

Or

You go to a new bar and you look over in the corner and notice this girl who winks at you and slowly starts licking her lips. You pull out your phone and Google “Body language of licking lips” to find out how to interpret this sign or signal. Was that a sign of overtly flirting with you, was she thirsty or were her lips chapped?

Now it very well may be that licking lips means nothing …but just in case you decide it’s time to find out what the body language of licking lips means.

There are plenty of times where people lick their lips and there can be a few reasons why they do so.

  • ·         Out of necessity because of lack of moisture
  • ·         Excitement about an idea or thought non sexual
  • ·         Out of habit
  • ·         Nervous tick
  • ·         Caused by a lie
  • ·         Suggestive

Every day reason for licking lips

Now just think for a moment when you were out in the sun and were hot or even possibly when it was really cold and your lips were chapped. Did you lick your lips? The chances are great that you licking your lips meant absolutely nothing but that it was needed. Now if someone were in your peripheral they could read into a little differently. This is a reminder why you need to take a look at what the normal actions are of the person are who you are looking at while interpreting their body language.

Excitement and licking lips

There are some people that when they get excited about anything they lick their lips. This rush of energy has to go somewhere for them and the lips are the answer. You would see this as a common trait or action that happens. You would want to know this baseline before making a decision as to whether or not they are lying or if they are just excited about a thought or belief.

Habit of licking lips or biting lips

There are also men and women who have developed the habit of licking or biting their lips over time and it means nothing except that it is a routine behavior. On the other hand if the man, woman or child has a normal behavior of licking their lips and all of the sudden in a situation that normal behavior doesn’t happen there might be a reason for it and it may not be good or it may need nothing at all. This means that it’s time to ask some questions to gather further information about what is going on.

 Nervous action of licking lips

On the next spectrum of the level from the body language of licking lips is the nervous tick or action. It may be the pressure of a tough question or an uncomfortable situation or room that would cause one to change their behavior and display. In this nervousness may fall the issue of lying but it doesn’t mean that there is a lie. It could very well be nervous energy just like a man or a woman tapping their foot. In fact you may see foot tapping and lip licking at the same time.

 Lying and licking lips

It could very well be that the man, woman or child that you are looking at is asked a tough question they pause and then they lick their lips with another pause and then answer your question. This may be a flat out sign that they are lying but be careful because remember it may be nervous energy. If you are a woman / girl and ask a guy do you love me? If he’s not ready be to answer this question be ready for all sorts of nervous behavior and stalls but even then it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you or he’s lying that’s just a tough question all of the sudden.

In the case of lying you are looking for abnormal behavior or an action that is not a normal routine for the person that you are looking at. Sometimes it may seem that licking the lips may be a symbolic greasing of the lips to get the big whopper of a lie out of their mouth. This action may take place as a way to get another half a second to figure a story out.

If you spend some time watching the television show “Cops” you will see the suspects start licking their lips after a few tough questions are asked with long pauses or short pauses. Are the suspects lying before or after they lick their lips? Quite possibly but this show is a good place to look and watch for the signs and signals of lying.

Just remember before you try and confront your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, kid or coworker of lying look for abnormal behavior then question about it. You may see other signs you have never seen before or you may see normal routines remember the baseline their behavior first.

Seduction and licking of the lips

In the example of the woman licking her lips at the bar that would be considered overt behavior to induce behavior from you or whoever it was generated towards. The licking of the lips may be considered sensual when directed towards a person. Now this is the body language that movies scenes are based upon. You may see a man or woman lick their lips when they meet a new person and they may not even know that they are doing so. Just remember that this may be some nervous energy or it could mean something else entirely. This action may take a few minutes or it may happen instantly depending on what is going on in the mind of the two and the type of chemistry that they have.

Now there may be a tendency to look at the lips when a man or woman licks them but you may want to be careful because staring at the lips may be seen as being sexual. So all of the sudden you get excited that someone is licking their lips and you start staring and the other person takes your body language as sexually advanced and that’s not what they were licking their lips for.

Licking lips for many reasons

There may be more than one reason why a person would or could lick their lips while some of them may be good others reasons may be bad. It is important to take the time to learn the behaviors and characteristics of a person’s routine actions or baseline them to determine what their action means or could be interpreted to mean.

Understanding body language can help you determine what the actions that other people mean. Learning how to read body language can be fun and also done at home:

Body language of shoulder shrugs

Body language of a shoulder shrug: There are very few actions that you can do nonverbally that are almost universal. On that list is or almost universal or universal nonverbal signs are:

The ability to read body language or nonverbal communication is about base lining or watching the man or the woman to make sure that what you are predicting or observing is accurate.

The shoulder shrug is an action where the shoulders go up while a question is asked or when a statement is made. Now this action can happen for the person asking the question or answering the question or the statement. There may also be a facial expression where the eyebrows go up along with the shoulder movement along with possible cheek movement and in some instances the eyes may be closed. There are many variations of facial expressions or even micro expressions that can be used with the shoulder shrug.

Along with the movements of the shoulders you may see that man woman or child raise their hands with their palms up. Some will explain that a person with the palms of their hands up is a sign of honesty or it could just be part of the shoulder shrug.

Body language of the shoulder shrug and what it means

There are a few things that the shoulder shrug can mean.

1.         I don’t know

2.         I don’t care or its up to you

3.         Uncertainty or on the fence about the options

No matter what the reason that the shoulder shrug is used the actions of the body will be similar whether the person doesn’t know, doesn’t care or even has uncertainty.

Body language of shoulder shrug while negotiating or arguing

There are times where the shoulder shrug can be used as a nonverbal action to engage in conversation or argument to get the other person to talk. This strategy can be used in negotiation or arguments where as it is a reaction to a question. A question or statement is made towards one person and there really isn’t a verbal answer just the shoulder shrug, the use or no verbal actions in a way is the statement to get the person who asked the question or made the original stamen to keep talking.

Now this persuasive strategy works the best if its only used one time in a conversation or an interaction with a group or individual, the more that it is used the more it is seen as a ploy and loses persuasive power.

When this action is used in an argument it can make the situation worse as it can be considered a sign of not caring by the person reading the action. The man or woman may think the shoulder shrug means one thing when the person using it means another. The best thing to do at this point is to ask for clarification about what is going on. Now it is important to know that the shoulder shrug can cause problems where the other person wants you to react.

Body language of shoulder shrug and travel

When you don’t have the capability to speak another language whether you are in your native land or not the shoulder shrug is the way to explain nonverbally to the other person or people that you don’t know or understand.

Having the ability to read the signs and signals of body language does give you an upper hand in business, dating and even personal life:

Body language of steepling

Body language of steepling: You may find yourself in a position where you are reading the nonverbal signs or signals of steepling. Usually you will find this body language action in the world of business or politics.

If you are viewing a man or a woman and watching their body language and see them take their fingertips and press them together while pushing out the palms of the hands almost like there is an invisible ball that they are holding onto that is a similar size of their hands.

Now when you see steepling there may be a few things that you can read into but as always you will want to watch the man or the woman for a moment to get a baseline as to what is going on. The signs, signals or thoughts that can come from steepling can be:

  • ·         Confidence
  • ·         Arrogance
  • ·         In some instances a power play or a false body language sign

 YouTube Preview Image

Body language of steepling and confidence

Typically steepling is considered a sign of confidence about a message or subject. You could see a businessman or woman in front of the board room steeple after a message. It is possible to see a politician steeple while in a debate when they want to deliver a strong point or they may steeple the entire time that they are talking. There are times in business while negotiating where you may see a manager, department head, buyer or a CEO steeple during a conversation.

Now you may interpret the signs of lack of confidence if the man or the woman is constantly shifting the position of their steeple.

You will want to take a look at the proximity of the person steepling to others to see where the power may be coming from. It may not be normal to have a person steeple within a close distance of another person, that may be a sign something is going on.

Body language of steepling and arrogance

As you read the body language of men and women you can see or read into other items as you interpret the actions that you are observing. There are times where steepling is beyond confidence and could be an indication of arrogance. The places you may see this is where a person who is powerful or thinks that they are powerful believes their message is superior. In this case you will see the steepling and quite possibly the micro expressions of disgust or even contempt through their facial expressions.

The body language of steepling and arrogance could be seen in front of a news crew, in a sales meeting from the buyer or the seller, in a court room while someone is on the stand.

Body language of steepling as a false body language sign

Being able to read and or understand nonverbal communication can help you see that sometimes people will use body language as a way to show something that they may not be. Take for instance someone is going into negotiations for a business opportunity and they see on the internet that steepling is a sign of power. Now this person knows that they lack power so they use this nonverbal action or sign to portray something that they are not. A skilled person who understands body language may be able to pick up on this “tell” or mistake.

A give away for a false body language sign with steepling may be in the shoulders. When you look at the signs of a confident man or woman you will see that for the most part their shoulders are pulled back. In the case of a false sign the man or woman may bring their shoulders in. The other items to look at would be:

  • ·         The feet to see if they are tapping
  • ·         The breathing pattern of the man or the woman to see if it stays consistent
  • ·         The lack of fluid motions in the arms or head

If you were to observe what you think is a false sign of body language you may wan to ask some specific questions to the man or the woman to put some pressure on them to see what type of response that you get not only nonverbally but also verbally. You may jst find that there is more to the story than what is being said.

Reading body language dangers

Reading body language dangers: You may not have considered that there is any danger when it comes to reading body language. Even the experts make mistakes when interpreting what a signor signal may mean. The biggest danger is that you are wrong in a given situation and it creates some repercussions that cannot be repaired.

Now there is something that happens when men or women decide that they want to understand nonverbal communication better and that is they try to hard an read too much into a situation to reveal what they have though.

 YouTube Preview Image

Reading body language and trying too hard

When men or women become interesting in reading body language they become eager to use their skills to help shed some light on a situation. The problem is moving too quickly of believing that every action has a meaning behind it.

Many times there is an underlying meaning to what the actions of the body mean. But on some occasions there is no meaning to what an action does or becomes.

Base lining the actions of a man, woman or child can help reveal what is really going on while interpreting the nonverbal communication of others.

Body language and the law of reaction

The people around you react to what you think is going on and when it comes to reading body language it only matters what the person thinks you are thinking. Their reaction is being based upon the thoughts and beliefs that they have about body language and what they think that an action means.

You may become an expert at reading body or an aspiring one but still you must be aware that there are many wrong beliefs as to what an action of the body equals and that means a set action or response will happen. Boyfriends have beliefs about what they think an action means when he sees his girlfriend talk to other guys. The action may be harmless but the reaction may cause problems. In all realities the action meant nothing but the boyfriend wanted the action to mean something. She may not have been lying but he wanted it so bad that he read into the actions to prove it.

There are time where you will want to believe so badly that an action really means something that you will do everything in your power to prove it right. This means you will dig in your heels sort of speak and defend your position even if you are wrong.

Reading body language and the danger of being right

There is another danger with reading body language or nonverbal communication and that is that you are right with what you read. You may find yourself in a position where you know that something is wrong and you can’t say anything. It may be that you catch your friends wife in a lie and know that something is up. It can even go the other way and that is you find out your friend is lying to his wife about something and it could even be cheating.

You may want to say something but there are times where you can’t, you will have to follow your own conscious as the way that you act.

You may be right when reading the nonverbal communications of others and their intention, you may even know that they are lying because you have used base lined the situation or you have read the micro expression of contempt when in the middle of a agreement. The challenge is when the people in your group do not agree with your assertions of beliefs as to what the facial expressions mean or could lead to.

The bigger danger is when you want to use the “I told you so” card later on down the road when your assertions were right about the dating, business or even just everyday life situation.

Reading body language and being patient

Be patient as you read the nonverbal actions of others especially when you are still learning your skills.

Be patient in reacting to others and their body language

Be patient before you describe what an actions could mean because there are times where relationships depend upon your description of the intentions of others.

Remember just like any other skill you will have to take the time to become better at what you do.

Reading body language or nonverbal communication can be used for so many things:

  • ·         Business
  • ·         Dating
  • ·         Making your communication better

Body language and the dangers of learning by Body language expert Scott Sylvan Bell

body language of blinking

Body language of blinking: When reading the body language or nonverbal communication of others one of the items that may identify deceit, lies, stress or even medical conditions is blinking. The action of blinking happens naturally and you can easily make mistakes when it comes to interpreting what blinking means.

There are some actions that people really cannot control that perform necessary functions and blinking is one of them.  This action keeps the eyes moisturized but also protects the eyes from debris and bright lights.

The average person blinks every 3-12 seconds and that can work out to 8-10 blinks per minute unless under stress or medical conditions.

Under stress, while fabricating or while lying the rate of blinking may increase.

Body language of blinking and lying

One common mistake that people make when reading the body language of a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife is that they are too quick to believe that excessive blinking is a definite sign of lying.

One of the signs of deception and or lying can be excessive blinking and through plenty of misinformation it’s an automatic belief in some it means lying. Now it may also be that the man or woman is under stress. You will have to be careful and baseline the person that you are examining to look for traits that would lead you to understand if it is a lie that is causing the blinking or jest the stress of being questioned. You will also want to take a look at the micro expressions that a man or woman has because if the person does not know about the accusations they should show surprise.

As a man or woman lies they may have a cluster of body language actions that happen when they start to deceive or fabricate. There may be touching of the face, excessive licking of the lips, a change in the breathing patterns, lack of eye contact, a long rub or stroke of a body part like the arm or leg. With these clusters you may notice that the blink rate would increase. This is where you would want to start questioning the story of what is going on if there is a combination of these items going on.

It could be either be the stress of the encounter or the fact that the man or woman is lying and in some instances it could be both. Just take your time before you make a judgment.

Body language of stress or fatigue

Fatigue or stress also may directly influence the rate of blinking. When being questioned by a significant other the stress alone may cause some questions about the blink rate. The signs and signals of stress or fatigue will be slower actions from the body.

Body language of blinking and allergies and medical conditions

Nervous system ailments can cause men or women to blink faster than normal and these faster blinks will be consistent for the most part.

Having contacts in may also cause extra blinking so if you know that the man or woman has contacts there is a time where you may want to count this item.

When eyes are itchy there are times where men and or women will blink faster than normal, you may see that they eyes are red and or puffy when this happens. When there is an issue or medical condition the faster blink rate may or may not be consistently fast. There are some people that when interacting with others that blink faster than what they would if they were not. People who work in dimly lit areas may also have blinking triggered.

Reading the body language of others along with their nonverbal signs and signals can help you understand if a man or woman is lying.

Body language of cufflinks

Body language of cufflinks: When looking at the nonverbal communication others you can look to their accessories to give you some nonverbal clues.

When looking at the body language of cufflinks you will want to look at the man or the woman wearing them. Traditionally cufflinks are an accessory that men would typically wear but some designers are adding cufflinks to women’s accessories.  In some instances they may add confidence or help with the lack of confidence.

There are a few things to look at when determining the nonverbal communication of an accessory and what it contributes to the body lf the man or the woman wearing them:

  • ·         What are they wearing, a suit or just a nice shirt
  • ·         Where are they and does the clothing match the occasion
  • ·         Is the man or woman showing off jewelry
  • ·         Are the cufflinks a super hero article or a trophy?

 YouTube Preview Image

Body language of cufflinks and a suit

Cufflinks add one more layer of customization when it comes to dressing up. There are all sorts of different designs and or materials that cufflinks are made of. For some men that dress up they match their cufflinks to their ties and or other accessories. Depending upon what the cufflinks look like they may or may not add to the appearance or the persona of the man or the woman wearing them. Some may say that a suit with a shirt that has French cuffs that allow cufflinks is more elegant and more professional.

Body language of a special occasion

There are some men or women who only wear their special shirt and cufflinks for a certain occasion. This would be for them to dress up for a special event and for them it isn’t an everyday item. This is where the extra layer of elegance for some would be. Cufflinks seem to be a special item to wear but not something every day.

Body language of persuasion and cufflinks

You may see top persuaders wear cufflinks as it does add to their appearance. For some people cufflinks are intimidating because they are not normally an everyday item for some people. In some industries the persona of the person wearing them makes them seem more professional or even the idea that there will be extra cost involved.

Body language of a status symbol

Just like any other accessory there is a wide range of options when it comes to cost and or design. You may find threaded balls that can be used as the cufflink but if one to wear the silk balls for a night out on town he or she may be judged for not “dressing up” enough for the situation these designs can run from $10- 15 for the set, so they may be considered the first step in cuff links

There are ranges from $6 to $2,500 or more for cufflinks as every major designer makes some for their clothes. You may find companies like:

  • ·         Scott Kay
  • ·         King Baby
  • ·         Konstantino
  • ·         David Donahue
  • ·         Burberry
  • ·         Louis Vuitton
  • ·         Gucci
  • ·         Tateossian RT

These manufacturers may have all sorts of designs from a classic silver plate with minimal designs all the way to football teams, animals, insects or other types of objects. For the cufflinks above the $150 range there are so many options to choose from;

  • ·         Silver and other jewelry
  • ·         Diamonds and or other precious stones
  • ·         Buffalo nickels and or other types of monetary coins

As a status symbol the accessories for the accessories can be fairly intricate and layered with precious stones and or metals. For the men or the women who wear cufflinks that are status symbols you may see them intently showing off what they are wearing. Maybe the man or the woman moves their arm awkwardly in order to get those around to see what they are wearing as an accessory. You may even see the man or the woman not showing off but still getting attention from the design in the cufflinks or the way that they match up with the clothing.

Body language of cufflinks and super hero articles or trophies

For some that wear cufflinks they may be a trophy or a gift. For some they may have been worn to a special occasion and have a special meaning. It may be that they were given as a prize or as an introduction into a group. When looked at like they have special powers they may be a super hero article. Now in an instance like this you may see the man or the woman wearing the cufflinks showing off or even being as covert as possible while wearing the trophy or the super hero article.

No matter who is wearing the cufflinks and where you are you will want to baseline the situation to see what is going on. The person wearing the accessories they may or may not be wearing a suit but there is a reason why they are wearing them. Just take your time and baseline the interactions that they are having nonverbally. Many times questions about interesting looking cufflinks may be a good opener when looking for a reason to start a conversation. Many times it’s an easy compliment and a way to get talking especially when they are intricate.

There is so much to the nonverbal stories and actions behind accessories and it’s not always an easy read.

Learning how to read body language and or interpret nonverbal communication can be fun and easy to learn:

body language of negotiation

Body language of negotiation: There are plenty of times where you can use body language or nonverbal communications to your advantage. Negotiating is something that people do on a dialy basis but may not even notice that they are doing it.

You may use the body language of negotiation with:

  • ·         Your co workers
  • ·         Your significant other
  • ·         Your kids
  • ·         The neighbor you don’t really like
  • ·         When buying a big ticket item

Body language of negotiation with coworkers

Using body language while negotiating may happen by the way that you stand. When you are face front to a man or woman there is a certain value to the direction that you face. You may have one of your feet pointing to the door as if you are saying I have somewhere else to be. This nonverbal action may just put the pressure on your coworker to answer you faster for something you want.

 YouTube Preview Image

Body language of negotiation with significant others

While dealing with your significant other you may bite your lip when they ask for “permission” to go somewhere with the friend you don’t like. The biting of the lip or smashing of the lips together may say my mouth is saying “yes” but my brain and my heart are telling me “no”. You may even see the deep breath being taken almost to say “here we go again” without saying it.

In some instances the body language of negotiation may be slamming a door or an item down when a question is asked. Anytime that body language is used to relay a message it may be used as a negotiation ploy.

Body language of negotiation with kids

So your kid cut their arm and you don’t want them to panic so you use your body language to get them to not freak out. You may disguise your true feelings with a smile it may not be a true smile but you may act like its no big deal. Body language of negotiation with the neighbor

You may have to deal with a difficult neighbor and you decide to take them a plate of cookies so that your hands are full so that you don’t use an offensive nonverbal hand gesture. You may even have the talkative neighbor so you decide to negotiate your time by having the conversation far away so they it is understood that you have things to do but it isn’t with them.

The nonverbal communication while making sales is no different, you will use your body language in a way that you may not even know you are doing it. So you wait for the “glance” or the facial expression” from your significant other just when the “closing question” is asked and you know who can be the bad guy and say “you have to think about it”.

The salesperson may use a lack of body language when you ask for a discount.

You may rub your face and breath a deep sigh when he or she counters.

The salesperson may just shake their head “yes” or “no” when you ask for a discount.

You may even get the end of the negotiation sign with body language and that is the handshake to signify that the dealing is over and you are both satisfied with the offer.

Body language of fear

Body language of fear: When it comes to reading body language or nonverbal communication of the “tells” or “leaks” that people have and can’t really control are micro expressions.

While reading the micro expressions of fear there are a few items to look at while reading facial expressions:

  • ·         The eyebrows
  • ·         The eyes and eye lids
  • ·         The mouth

Micro expressions of fear and the eyebrows

The eyebrows with the micro expression of fear with start with the eyebrows. They eyebrows will move upwards but also smash towards the center of the nose as one single movement. In most instances the eyebrows will move up as high as possible.

Micro expressions of fear and the eyes

With the emotion of fear the micro expressions for this non verbal action will have two things that happen.

  1. 1.      The top of the eyelids will move up high
  2. 2.      The bottom eyelid will flatten out

For all micro expression this is the only one that has these two actions when it comes to the eyes.

Micro expressions of fear and the mouth

When the emotion of fear is expressed the facial feature of the mouth will cause the corners of the lips to pull back towards the ears. This facial feature will almost make the lips flat.

Body language of fear

When a man or a woman shows the nonverbal emotion of fear the hands may raise in front of their face or trunk to protect the body. There are times where the hands and arms may get pulled to the body. Different people may have completely different reactions.

You may see a man or a woman cry after they are scared or they may even get angry depending upon the situation. There is no absolute formula when it comes to reading body language for every man or woman on the planet. Body Language of surprise

Body Language of surprise: When reading the body language of men or women and looking for surprise there are a few facial expressions to look at:

  • ·         Eyes
  • ·         Eyebrows
  • ·         Mouth

When you want to understand or even how to tell when a man or woman is surprised there are a few things that they will do with their micro expressions. You will see the eyebrows lift up, the eyes will open and the mouth will open.

When dealing with micro expressions is good to note that they may last for a fraction of a second. They may not last long at all. The facial expressions can give up the information needed of the emotions so that you can interpret the nonverbal cues given.
