Body language of steepling

Body language of steepling: You may find yourself in a position where you are reading the nonverbal signs or signals of steepling. Usually you will find this body language action in the world of business or politics.

If you are viewing a man or a woman and watching their body language and see them take their fingertips and press them together while pushing out the palms of the hands almost like there is an invisible ball that they are holding onto that is a similar size of their hands.

Now when you see steepling there may be a few things that you can read into but as always you will want to watch the man or the woman for a moment to get a baseline as to what is going on. The signs, signals or thoughts that can come from steepling can be:

  • ·         Confidence
  • ·         Arrogance
  • ·         In some instances a power play or a false body language sign

Body language of steepling and confidence

Typically steepling is considered a sign of confidence about a message or subject. You could see a businessman or woman in front of the board room steeple after a message. It is possible to see a politician steeple while in a debate when they want to deliver a strong point or they may steeple the entire time that they are talking. There are times in business while negotiating where you may see a manager, department head, buyer or a CEO steeple during a conversation.

Now you may interpret the signs of lack of confidence if the man or the woman is constantly shifting the position of their steeple.

You will want to take a look at the proximity of the person steepling to others to see where the power may be coming from. It may not be normal to have a person steeple within a close distance of another person, that may be a sign something is going on.

Body language of steepling and arrogance

As you read the body language of men and women you can see or read into other items as you interpret the actions that you are observing. There are times where steepling is beyond confidence and could be an indication of arrogance. The places you may see this is where a person who is powerful or thinks that they are powerful believes their message is superior. In this case you will see the steepling and quite possibly the micro expressions of disgust or even contempt through their facial expressions.

The body language of steepling and arrogance could be seen in front of a news crew, in a sales meeting from the buyer or the seller, in a court room while someone is on the stand.

Body language of steepling as a false body language sign

Being able to read and or understand nonverbal communication can help you see that sometimes people will use body language as a way to show something that they may not be. Take for instance someone is going into negotiations for a business opportunity and they see on the internet that steepling is a sign of power. Now this person knows that they lack power so they use this nonverbal action or sign to portray something that they are not. A skilled person who understands body language may be able to pick up on this “tell” or mistake.

A give away for a false body language sign with steepling may be in the shoulders. When you look at the signs of a confident man or woman you will see that for the most part their shoulders are pulled back. In the case of a false sign the man or woman may bring their shoulders in. The other items to look at would be:

  • ·         The feet to see if they are tapping
  • ·         The breathing pattern of the man or the woman to see if it stays consistent
  • ·         The lack of fluid motions in the arms or head

If you were to observe what you think is a false sign of body language you may wan to ask some specific questions to the man or the woman to put some pressure on them to see what type of response that you get not only nonverbally but also verbally. You may jst find that there is more to the story than what is being said.

Learning how to read body language or nonverbal communication could give yu the edge in business, dating and even negotiating with others;

Body language of sadness

Body language of sadness: When looking at the body language of men or women there are ways to almost “read minds” by being able to understand and interpret the micro expressions of sadness.

When you are sad there are certain things that you will do nonverbally and there are specific things you will do with your facial features. The body language of sadness has some very specific things that happen with the face.

You can read the micro expressions of sadness by looking at:

  • ·         The eyes
  • ·         The mouth

Micro expressions of sadness and the eyes

When a man or a woman is sad their eyes will droop from the top and while looking at them they will not have focus. It will almost seem like they are not looking at anything in specific or have nowhere to go. There is no sense of purpose about the man or the woman who is showing the signs and signals of sadness.

Micro expressions of sadness and the mouth

As you look at a person who is displaying the micro expression of sadness you will see their mouth turn down with a slight pull to the corners. This look will be like a slight pout. You may even see a little twitching when looking at the corners

Micro expressions and the rest of the body language of sadness

Any emotion will leak through other parts of the body when someone is living through them. Most of the time when a man or woman is sad you will see them moving slower than normal almost like they are in a sped up version of slow motion. You may see their arms folded as if they are holding themselves. There may even be more signs in the body language of someone who is showing the emotion of sadness and that may be they the man or the woman will look downwards consistently. Last of all you may see that the man or woman who is sad breathes slower than normal.

Its always a good idea to baseline a person who’s body language you are reading first. This means that you watch their actions and or their micro expressions for a moment before coming to a conclusion about what their body language is saying.

Body language of fear

Body language of fear: When it comes to reading body language or nonverbal communication of the “tells” or “leaks” that people have and can’t really control are micro expressions.

While reading the micro expressions of fear there are a few items to look at while reading facial expressions:

  • ·         The eyebrows
  • ·         The eyes and eye lids
  • ·         The mouth

Micro expressions of fear and the eyebrows

The eyebrows with the micro expression of fear with start with the eyebrows. They eyebrows will move upwards but also smash towards the center of the nose as one single movement. In most instances the eyebrows will move up as high as possible.

Micro expressions of fear and the eyes

With the emotion of fear the micro expressions for this non verbal action will have two things that happen.

  1. 1.      The top of the eyelids will move up high
  2. 2.      The bottom eyelid will flatten out

For all micro expression this is the only one that has these two actions when it comes to the eyes.

Micro expressions of fear and the mouth

When the emotion of fear is expressed the facial feature of the mouth will cause the corners of the lips to pull back towards the ears. This facial feature will almost make the lips flat.

Body language of fear

When a man or a woman shows the nonverbal emotion of fear the hands may raise in front of their face or trunk to protect the body. There are times where the hands and arms may get pulled to the body. Different people may have completely different reactions.

You may see a man or a woman cry after they are scared or they may even get angry depending upon the situation. There is no absolute formula when it comes to reading body language for every man or woman on the planet. In most instances base lining the previous actions would help to determine what is or has been going on.

There are some times where reading the body or the nonverbal communication must be done instantly. In those cases it would be a good idea to have enough knowledge to act correctly.

Body language of anger

Body language of anger: When reading the nonverbal communication of men or women there are sometimes where the body language is 100% obvious. There are also times where you will have to read into the micro expressions of others the help you understand or interpret what is going on.

Micro expressions are really a way that you can read minds of other people by looking at what they are doing.  You can even tell if they are surprised or have contempt just from looking at the face.

It is important to remember that most mirco expression only happen for a fraction of a second and some instances they can last longer. You may just get an ever so slight moment to catch on to what a man or woman is feeling or thinking.

While reading the micro expressions of anger you will want to look at the face of the man or woman and look for:

  • ·         The eyebrows
  • ·         The eyes
  • ·         The mouth

Body language of anger – The eyebrows

The micro expressions of men and women will be the same when it comes to anger. You will start by looking at their eyebrows. When angry the eyebrows will tilt in towards the center of the face or both will be flat and lower. There will be times where the nonverbal communication of anger will be felt from others just from looking at the eyebrows.

Body language of anger – The eyes

When reading the body language of anger the eyes will have a glare to them. In some instances the man or the woman will squint their eyes and in some instances even with the eyebrows down or flat the eyes will be wide open.

Body language of anger – The mouth

The body language of anger in a man or woman will also show through with their mouth. When the micro expressions of anger is shown at the mouth it will be done so through the narrowing of the lips. It may seem as if the man or the woman is biting their lips or holding them so tight they can’t let a word out of their mouth.

Body language of anger – other nonverbal cues from the body

When people are angry their body language or actions will be more animated. The man or the woman may shake their finger at another person and at times their hands will be as far away from the body as possible. You may see the person stomp, waive their arms, punch at non animated objects or people or they may just ball up wherever they are. When a man or woman is angry it is best to leave them alone and stay away from them as your actions may provoke them even further.

How to improve your micro expression skills

In order to experience the body language of anger one of the best things to do is look in the mirror and pretend that you are angry. You will want to look at your eyebrows, your nose and your mouth so that you can see exactly what your own micro expressions are and what your nonverbal communication shows others when you have a feeling or an emotion that can be read off of your face. This goes for any of the other micro expressions also.

Reading body language of leaders part 1

Reading body language: Some people have it and some people fake it. How to read body language sings of a leader can help you understand who has the traits and who does not.

Sometimes people are thrust into leadership and excel at what they do and some people just cant lead their way out of a wet paper sack.

Reading body language leaders who are effective
Reading body language of leaders messages

There are a few items when reading the body language of a leader to note to scrutinize their leadership through nonverbal communication:

  • ·         Crispness of body movements
  • ·         Keeping hands and nonverbal communication in the “bell bubble”
  • ·         Posture while standing or sitting
  • ·         Facial expressions or lack of them
  • ·         How the leader interacts when delivering a good or bad message
  • ·         How the leader interacts with good or bad questions
  • ·         If the leader makes the common mistakes of lying.

Reading the body language of leaders can help you to know what to do and not to do in front of the media or even in front of your office.

Body language of confidence through movement

People who are confident have a glide to their movements whereas they are not too jerky and not too rigid.  For the most part this ability to have movements that glide signifies comfort and in turn will allow those who are watching the leader to help see confidence in their message. Now the person who is the leader may have an ability to fake confidence somewhat and when this happens there will be a point where their guard drops and their weakness can be seen through. While you view them they will have a point where something may not seem right and it may just be a brief second where they make a facial expression or they lose their posture. The leader in a moment of weakness may even use his hands or part of his body to block a bad question.

Body language of hand movements for a leader

For a leader to have strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills they need to know what they can or cannot do with their hands and arms. It may seem silly to say that man or woman has to watch how far away their arms get from their body but a strong communicator knows that a person judging them will only give them one shot as to be seen as strong and a capable leader.  That is part of the price to pay to lead. Keeping hands close to the body but not too close will show through nonverbal communication that the leader has self-control. Self-control shows the person or the crowd that the leader has the attributes of someone who can spearhead an organization, country, group or any other place where needed.

Reading body language of a leaderhip style
Reading body language of leaders who are confident

Reading body language of a leaders posture

A leader when delivering their message has to have the right posture. The way that he or she stands or sits will show confidence or defeat. When a leader stands with confidence they will be completely upright and straight unless there is a medical condition or injury, their shoulders will be square and slightly rolled back. As they look out at their people, group or even congregation their chin will be up but no so far that they show arrogance. Throughout their interaction this posture will stay unless there is a moment of weakness that shows through.

The posture of the leader in question when the combination of posture, hand gesture and smoothness of body movements combine they may show through as a sort of charisma by the viewers of the leader.

Reading body language of the hands part 1

Reading body language: The hands are the first things that get away from the body when communicating.

There are times where your hands can be seen as passive or aggressive. Depending on what you want your body language to read may depend upon what position that you put your hands in.

You may see people hold their hands out like they are begging. Now this body language of the hands may be both passive or aggressive. If the person is a beggar it may be seen as aggressive. If the man or woman is asking for help it is passive. (as a side note the video says that hands out like a beggar is passive and that is partially correct).

If you have your hands facing downwards you may also find the body language of the hands to be passive or aggressive depending upon the situation. If you are sitting with clients in a business situation your hands may be seen as aggressive when placed wrong. You may seem like you are bored with the presentation or angry at the message. If your hands are folded the message may also be seen as passive.

If the movements are vigorous and or fast the hands facing down may be seen as aggressive. If the movements of the hands are slower than normal they may be seen as passive. The context of the situation along with the proximity is what is going to help determine what the body language that is being read means.

Understanding what your body language is projecting is important so that the person viewing and interpreting you actions are seen as congruent. If you are successful with sending the right message and signals you win in the  eyes of the viewer or viewers. When done wrong your body language can betray you and you may not even know it.

Sometimes in a business setting you can get your body language to say what you want by holding a pen in your hands while paying attention to the people you are working with. The pen keeps your hands in position that seems normal and allows you to project the right message.

Reading body language of sunglasses

Reading body language: When you take a look at people with sunglasses you may not have realized or understood that there is body language involved.

Sunglasses can be used for more than blocking the sunlight form your eyes, they can be used for so many more reasons:

  • ·         Style
  • ·         Following the crowd
  • ·         Intimidation
  • ·         Medical conditions

Reading body language of sunglasses and intimidation
Reading body language of sunglasses and style

Body language reading of reasons to wear sunglasses

There are times that style dictates that men or women wear sunglasses. Now these sun glasses could have light or dark lenses. Some people would interpret that dark sunglasses could mean that the person is hiding something. Now sometimes in order to fulfill a persona with the style men or women will wear their sunglasses indoors or even at night. If the glasses are for style many times they will be from a designer, in some instances part of style is to use cheap sunglasses instead of the more costly designer brands.

Now style and following the crowd are two different things when it comes to the body language of sunglasses. Style can be an individual effort while following the crowd is a little different.

In some instances the lenses of the glasses will have a mirror reflection on them. This coating on the lenses will cause even more intimidation to happen. The hope is that you will feel desperate to understand what is going on in the other persons mind or even left out.

In the case where a man or woman would need to intimidate another person they may wear their glasses so that their eyes cannot be seen. This means that the other person has no real contact or feel and that the intimidation can be felt but the other man or woman can’t really put their finger on it. This disconnect causes the intimidation.

Mirrored sunglasses have a body language of their own. Reading into why people wear them and why they need to intimidate others or they could be wearing them as a way to hide from society.

There are some who feel that they need to hide and no matter the style or intimidation factor they will put the glasses on so they can’t be read easily.

Reading body language sunglasses and interpreting their meaning
reading body language of sunglasses at night

The last explanation of the body language of sunglasses is that some people have to wear them because of medical conditions. There are some men or women that need sunglasses to help see outside whether it is bright or night. There are some people who even have to have some sort of tinting to their glasses at night to help protect their eyes.

If you do have to interpret the body language being portrayed by sunglasses on a man or woman it is important to take the time to read the person to understand why they are wearing the glasses.

Reading body language of super hero articles or accessories

Lastly there are some who would wear the glasses because they may increase the internal feelings of the man or woman almost as if they were a super hero. In a sense it is like dressing up and role playing while being a kid. Some men or women will have complete changes in their body language of more confidence by just using sunglasses so they become more than an accessory. This personification of this one article changes the whole persona of the person wearing them.

Reading body language of hands

Reading body language: There are so many ways that we are judged for our communication both verbally and nonverbally. When most people communicate they use their hands for some sort of gesture to add to their words and that adds to their communication.

The body language that is read from the use of hands to communicate can be interpreted in so many ways good or bad.

First off an effective communicator would not put their hands too far away from their body. This would push the hands out past the “Bell Bubble”. When other people are reading your body language in their eyes you may lose social value when your hands get too far away from your body as it may be seen as a lack of control.

Reading body language of the hands of women
Reading body language includes the hands

Social value would be your perceived value by others as they watch your body language as one complete action.

Reading the body language of the hands

The hands tell so much when it comes to a person and looking at them could give you a clue as to what the person does for a living. Are the hands of the man or the women that is being read by  another person:

  • ·         Smooth and soft
  • ·         Rough and callused
  • ·         Clean consistently
  • ·         Dirty and stained

All of these appearances of the hands will tell you what type of job that the man or woman may have. If a man has callused hands it could be a sign that the work that is done is rough. If the hands of the man are soft it may mean that he has an easy job. Now these two differences are not absolutes as someone who works with their hands may use gloves.

It would be wrong to judge this situation quickly because some people who work with their hands take very good care of them and it would be hard to tell what type of job they have.

These small clues from reading the hands can give you some information but not all of what you would need to make an informed explanation as to the state of the man.

Now reading the body language of a woman’s hands is similar to the hands of men. You will look for the same items when it comes to the condition of the skin. Are her hands soft and smooth or does it look and seem as if she works with them. Now if you are a man you would have to be very careful as to make an observation about a woman’s hands that is something that is saved for a woman to say to other women.

Reading the condition of the hands and body language

Now the condition of the skin for men or women is one thing but the fingernails are another item all together. Reading into the fingernails of the man or woman go one more step as to what the person does. There are some men and or women who don’t care what their nails look like so what does that say about the person? Not much exactly as they may not care or understand that there may be a meaning associated with the looks of their nails or they may have a job or trade where it does not matter.

So what kinds of jobs matter when it comes to the condition of hands and fingernails for a man or women while reading into their body language?  Professional jobs:

  • ·         Doctors – sometimes*
  • ·         Attorneys – sometimes*
  • ·         Salespeople – sometimes*
  • ·         Jewelers – sometimes*

*It says sometimes because only sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn’t.

Reading body language of hands can explain occupation
Reading body language of mens hands

For jobs where it does matter what the hands look like it would be a good idea to get manicures performed too keep up the appearance of the hands to be read by others in a manner where it gives an advantage. If a man or a woman gets a manicure does it mean that they are more detailed oriented? It is possible but it doesn’t mean that they are. Does it mean that they will communicate better? It may if the man or woman is put under scrutiny for what their hands look like.

So now that you have the appearance of what the hands can mean how does this really affect body language?

The hands may draw a reaction like repulsion or disgust or they may even draw surprise when they are neat and clean.

People look at your hands and fingernails more than people would guess especially when women meet other men or women.

Your hands are usually in front of you when you are communicating so they are one of the first things that people may have the capability of judging once they get close to you.

It is important to also remember that when people are reading your body language or nonverbal communication skills they are reacting to what they believe your body language means.

Reading body language of fashion

Reading body language: Understanding and interpreting human behavior can take someone many places. When it comes to reading body language there are so many things to look at to determine what someone is thinking and in a way people who are good at reading body language may sometimes come across as clairvoyant or even mind readers.

There are some significant items to look at while interpreting nonverbal communication and in some instances these items may carry more weight in given situations.

One item in specifics that may give a huge insight as to what people are saying without saying is it is their choice for fashion.

Reading the body language of a CEO

Think about it this way for a second. If you were to look at a fortune 500 CEO and see him in his custom business suit would his body language read differently while he was in his uniform vs if he were out on a beach working on a tan in board shorts?

The answer would depend upon the CEO and how they view themselves but for the most part a person’s attire will directly affect their actions verbally and nonverbally.

For some people what they decide to wear becomes their outfit to become a super hero. Now this may or may not sound strange but some people build their confidence from what they wear. If they are in some attire that they feel makes them better for any given reason they become more confident.

There are some people who don’t care about what they wear and there are others who care about what they wear because of the opinion of their peers.

In a business setting with one of these CEO’s their attire may cause them to be seen as a hero or as a villain to their peers.

Reading the body language of fashion attire causes one to question, is the person wearing their outfit, gear or costume because they want to or because of the peer pressure to fit into a mold or category that has been defined by another person or group.

Take for instance the CEO who is in the board shorts, would his message be the same visually if he were to give a presentation in those board shorts vs. in his custom suit?

Is there a reason that his suit would need to be custom because it is expected or because he or even she is worried about what people think of their fashion sense or style?

The answer may be both reasons. He or she may need to wear their attire that is specified to fit into the mold that has been created and followed since who knows when.

For a man who would be used to some of the custom labels like Canali or Ermenegildo Zegna with a super 160 fabric or higher, an off the rack suit basic super 110 fabric may destroy his confidence (for the intents of this article the higher the number on the fabrics the better the wool used). This could be the same for his tie, shirts, shoes and even cuff links. In some instances peoples watches can be their super hero attire that they use for confidence.

Reading body language of fashion and women
Reading body langauge of fashionable clothing

Reading body language of women and fashion

Some women and even men are really into fashion. The designer for them really matters, the colors of the clothes really matter, the fit really matters and even the materials really matter.

Name off a bunch of designers and these people would know who they are easily: Versace, Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Brioni, Armani, Prada and they could talk about each of their fashion lines. Now these names could go on forever whether European or even some of the American designers.

When someone is confident and comfortable their body language reads entirely different from when a person is uncomfortable and lacks confidence and clothing plays a big part of that.

Confident people tend to:

  • ·         Walk more smoothly as it almost seems as an unlabored glide
  • ·         Sit up straight more consistently
  • ·         They may keep their hands away from their body as protection
  • ·         Their breathing pattern may be relaxed
  • ·         There is more of a calmness to them overall
  • ·         Verbally they seem to talk faster with an almost exacting knowledge

Some people gather these feelings and abilities from what they wear.

Reading into the body language of a man or woman who is uncomfortable would show:

  • ·         A general lack of confidence throughout their body, they may try to make themselves smaller in stature to not stand out.
  • ·         Some stress in their facial expressions and even sometimes sheer fear or frustration could be seen in the reactions
  • ·         Maybe a rapid pace of breathing almost to a panic
  • ·         A haphazard approach to their nonverbal actions where they would not seem consistent or smooth. In some instances they would seem out of place
  • ·         They may be shifty or fidgety with their hands playing with buttons or even a pen

Reading the body language of a man or woman’s fashion may show both the positives and negatives of their nonverbal communication.

For a man or woman who is used to being seen in a specific clothing style or designer they may have problems appearing in public or in the board room in something that would not be deemed good or desirable from their peers.

Women love their shoes and they are not just and accessory they make the outfit, if they had to show up somewhere in a pair of shoes that would get them ridiculed by other women their confidence would be decreased for the most part and their body language would show the signs of their stress. A women who is used to wearing $2,500 Christian Louboton shoes may have trouble going out for a night in $20 off brand basics especially if she knows that she will be judged by other women.

Reading body language of fashion and women

Reading body language of purses and watches with confidence

Celebrity women or even just regular women may also need to have the latest or greatest purse or handbag by one of the top designers Hermes comes to mind with their $25,000 Birkin Bag. Sometimes just this article alone can be the device used as the super hero powers like a man and his Rolex or other similar watch that shows status to the rest of the world.

Some men or women seem to float as they walk by with their fashionable attire. In some instances this float may become arrogance or may even make up for a lack of confidence. The body language that is read may sow contempt to the people who are around them for whatever reason or the man or the woman may just turn their nose up at others around them.

Take away some of these peoples status symbols of fashion or accessories and the men or women lose their super-secret special powers and abilities.

Reading body language of fashion and designers may help you understand and interpret why a person has confidence of lacks it.

Reading body language homework

You have something in your closet or drawers that make you a super hero or feel like a villain sit down for a moment and figure out if those items or that single item is your source of confidence or if you are confident in general. It is a help to know what makes you feel better when your body language is being read and needs to project confidence and knowledge. For some it may be a tie, a suit, a watch, underwear, a pair of slingbacks (that’s a type of women’s shoe for the men who are reading think high heels), a bag or even a big fat diamond ring.

Take the time to understand why these items make you feel better and become your own internal super hero and it may surprise you what you find out.

Reading body language like an expert is a skill that can be learned. Understanding and interpreting nonverbal communication is a strategy that can help you in business life as well as your social life.

Reading body language of flirting men and women part 3

Reading body language: While reading and interpreting the body language of flirting by men or women the head, eyes, mouth and eyebrows have been discussed.

Determining what communication is while flirting for some can be a challenge when they try to read men or women’s body language.

The hands and the body are the two physical things that can be touched or used to flirt with men or women.

There are times where touching the other person in order to flirt happen for both sexes. There are challenges with the body language of flirting because it is easy to go too far quickly and cross the line of appropriate actions.

While flirting with the hands touching the other person’s body can be done in a few places that right off would be along the realms of appropriate. The first safe place is the upper arm the second place would be the forearm and lastly the hand may be the last place that would be considered appropriate.

Now there are some people who are just more “touchy” than other and may just come across as a big flirt and that is why you would have to look at the body language of the man or the woman who you consider flirting with you. Some of what you would have to consider would be their verbal actions but for the most part most flirting would come across as non verbal.

To determine if someone is flirting with you by touch you would have to consider the other signs of flirting.

Is the man or woman using the other nonverbal communication skills: A head tilt, the arching of eyebrows a wink, fluttering their eyes, licking their lips or even staring at the mouth? Those are all ways that flirting can happen.

The last part of flirting and body language would be contact with the body. There are times where men or women could be completely overt in their actions while flirting. For men or women a body brush can happen or occur. This is where someone brushes up against you and there was not a need. Now if you are in a crowded place it does not mean that someone is interested if they brush against you but if some of the other signs of flirting with body language are used you may have a man or a woman who is interested in you.

The body language of flirting can also use proximity or the distance that one person is from the person who they may be flirting with. In most instances the interested person will draw closer to the person that they are flirting with.

Now whether the person is close in proximity or a little further away “preening” may be used as a way to gain attention. The preening that could be used may include:

  • ·         Playing with hair
  • ·         Fixing clothing are fixing an accessory
  • ·         Rubbing a body part as a way to accentuate that specific area and in some instances this may be an explicit action.

Some of these actions while reading the body language of flirting can be seen directly while some of these actions may be a little more covert. The beast plan of action is to understand what each action means before having to interpret them incorrectly.

Taking your time to learn how to read body language or non verbal communication of flirting and seduction can help you understand more about human relations.
