body language of blinking

Body language of blinking: When reading the body language or nonverbal communication of others one of the items that may identify deceit, lies, stress or even medical conditions is blinking. The action of blinking happens naturally and you can easily make mistakes when it comes to interpreting what blinking means.

There are some actions that people really cannot control that perform necessary functions and blinking is one of them.  This action keeps the eyes moisturized but also protects the eyes from debris and bright lights.

The average person blinks every 3-12 seconds and that can work out to 8-10 blinks per minute unless under stress or medical conditions.

Under stress, while fabricating or while lying the rate of blinking may increase.

Body language of blinking and lying

One common mistake that people make when reading the body language of a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife is that they are too quick to believe that excessive blinking is a definite sign of lying.

One of the signs of deception and or lying can be excessive blinking and through plenty of misinformation it’s an automatic belief in some it means lying. Now it may also be that the man or woman is under stress. You will have to be careful and baseline the person that you are examining to look for traits that would lead you to understand if it is a lie that is causing the blinking or jest the stress of being questioned. You will also want to take a look at the micro expressions that a man or woman has because if the person does not know about the accusations they should show surprise.

As a man or woman lies they may have a cluster of body language actions that happen when they start to deceive or fabricate. There may be touching of the face, excessive licking of the lips, a change in the breathing patterns, lack of eye contact, a long rub or stroke of a body part like the arm or leg. With these clusters you may notice that the blink rate would increase. This is where you would want to start questioning the story of what is going on if there is a combination of these items going on.

It could be either be the stress of the encounter or the fact that the man or woman is lying and in some instances it could be both. Just take your time before you make a judgment.

Body language of stress or fatigue

Fatigue or stress also may directly influence the rate of blinking. When being questioned by a significant other the stress alone may cause some questions about the blink rate. The signs and signals of stress or fatigue will be slower actions from the body.

Body language of blinking and allergies and medical conditions

Nervous system ailments can cause men or women to blink faster than normal and these faster blinks will be consistent for the most part.

Having contacts in may also cause extra blinking so if you know that the man or woman has contacts there is a time where you may want to count this item.

When eyes are itchy there are times where men and or women will blink faster than normal, you may see that they eyes are red and or puffy when this happens. When there is an issue or medical condition the faster blink rate may or may not be consistently fast. There are some people that when interacting with others that blink faster than what they would if they were not. People who work in dimly lit areas may also have blinking triggered.

Reading the body language of others along with their nonverbal signs and signals can help you understand if a man or woman is lying.

As always I would like to thank you in advance for your comments and or questions about blinking and lying.

Reading body language of Presidential candidates Part 1

YouTube Preview Image

Reading body language: While reading the body language of aspiring leaders there are a few things to remember. An effective leader is one that communicates a message effectively. On the other hand because someone is a good communicator it does not make them an effective leader.

Presidential campaigns and debates from the Democrats and the Republicans and all parties are put under scrutiny when it comes to their candidate as to the message that he or she can deliver. Reading the body language of the nominee or the contender during the debates gives a glimpse of what the man or woman would do under pressure in front of cameras if there were an accident, act of nature, war or anything else that a President may have to deal with while in office.

In some instances the reactions to the man or the woman who is hopeful of becoming president is over read and in some instances the man or the woman is set up to get a reaction that can be read into.

Reading the body language of reactions

Your body language and the interpretation comes one to one thing and that is the reaction from the other person. Looking at the law of reaction when it comes to body language and reading into the situation it is important to point out whatever you are watching and reading into only matters as to what you believe. So you think that the Presidential hopeful is closed off because he or she crosses their arms, then that is what it means.

Hope is not a strategy for the man or woman seeking the nomination to move forward in the election process.

Every good reaction in the body language that is being read by the viewer gives the man or the woman a little more confidence in the viewer’s eyes. Every blunder when it comes to the nonverbal communication of the man or the women takes a little away from their campaign for the moment or for good in some instances.

Huge key point: No matter in politics, business, relationships and even friendships people are judged on their body language reactions to incidents, questions, agreements, stories, other body language and even beliefs.

Reading body language of Presidential candidates during the debates

People want to see that their leader is strong and appears strong in public and this strength can be seen through the confidence of the leader. A confident leader has a few traits when it comes to reading their body language:

  • ·         An effective posture
  • ·         Gliding movements
  • ·         Good eye contact
  • ·         Good awareness of proximity to others
  • ·         Using the body as a stage and keeping aware of the “Bell Bubble”
  • ·         Stays away from body language signs and signals of lying or deceit
  • ·         Displaying the correct emotion to be read from the crowd of citizens, constituents or clients.

Reading the body language of confidence by a Presidential candidate during a debate

The posture of leaders or presidential hopefuls is usually that of one of a man or woman who stands straight up. Their chin is not too far up as to seem arrogant but not low enough to seem depressed. This posture helps the person watching or viewing the ability to determine the leader or Presidential candidate understands the situation and has control over what is going on behind the scenes.

The lack of a good posture in a moment of presenting may show the signs and signals of weakness or defeat.

The debates allows for the viewer to decide who would be best to run the country based upon what they see and hear from the Presidential candidate and this includes what body language that is read into by the viewer especially that of confidence.

Reading body language of Presidential candidate movements

When a Presidential candidate being whether a man or woman have confidence their body language shows the signs of it. A confident Presidential candidate will have a glide to their actions, they will not seem jerky and on the other hand they will not seem too fast. The body language of a strong Presidential candidate will be smooth and that smoothness will convey confidence even in the face of a difficult or bad question about something they have done in the past.

If a video clip is replayed of the Presidential candidate at the debate and their words do not go over well the visual signs of the man or woman being confident may be enough to sway a voter because they were able to connect a good emotion with the sight of the candidate showing confidence through difficult times.

Think about the times where you have seen what is going on with the show on television and could not hear the words but you were able to interpret or even possibly understand the situation because you were able to pick up on the nonverbal cues of the people in the show.

On the other hand you may have seen a show and the body language of a guest you were reading led you to believe that the person on the show was having difficulties with what was either being said or what was being done. Nonverbal actions may be able to make up for verbal mistakes in some instances.

Reading body language of eye contact from Presidential candidates

Presidential candidates who have and maintain good eye contact from those who are viewing their debates may be seen as more Presidential by those reading their body language because there may be more of a connection to the audience or the viewer.

Good eye contact can make or break a conversation or a debate for a Presidential Candidate.

Great eye contact may take someone who was not really into a Presidential candidate before the debate to a believer into what they are saying or what they propose to do. Now it is difficult to experience real eye contact from a person who is watching a debate through a television but when a Presidential candidate connects with the live audience or crown it may be conveyed through the screen and give the feeling to the television viewer of real.

If a tough question was asked during the debate of the Presidential candidate did they look away and try not to answer the question or did they tackle it head on with good eye contact like hey had nothing to hide along with showing confidence in their posture?

Did they look into the camera or at the crowd when they were asked about a tough position they have held and now want to change because of public opinion?

Think back to when you were a kid and dealing with a Mother or Father, if you didn’t give them good eye contact when they asked about something you did or were going to do did they think you were lying?

You may get that chance to decide who is the best fit for you and your beliefs while watching the Presidential Debates.

The same goes for Presidential candidates who debate from the Republican or even Democrat parties or even those from the Libertarians or Green parties.

In the next article we will discuss a few more exciting things about reading the body language of Presidential candidates while debating.

Reading the body language of politicians or those who want to be politicians is a great skill to learn here:

Reading body language of leaders part 2

Reading body language: Leadership has many important facets but one of the most important is the nonverbal communication that underlies the body language of the leader.  There are times where the actions of the body while communicating will erode the message from the leader.

Reading body language of leaders part 1

Reading body language of female leaders
Reading body language of effective leaders

At some point either our vocal words will betray us or the actions of the body will. There is however a downside and that is when people are watching you and listening have their own opinion to what your words and actions mean to them.

Reading body language of facial expressions

While watching the body language of a leader and interpreting their facial features may be the most telling and or damaging at the same time. Most people do not have the ability to hide what their face is doing. In many instances it is the hardened liar is used to keeping his or her facial features under wrap as to not give the emotion attention.

Most leaders who have spent time in front of audiences have had coaching as to what to do or not to do. Any body language coach worth their weight will help their clients learn to not use too many facial features because they may not connect with the viewer or client.

A good leader will keep their facial features blank when needed, disgusted when needed or even excited when needed. What you will find is that a well taught leader will use their facial expressions when needed and hopefully for them their body language that is being read will come across as confident.  On the other hand you may have someone who is a great leader but has not been coached as to what to do in public who can lose credibility because of their lack of training.

Reading the body language of a leaders message

Leaders know that they will at some point not only be on the end of a good message but they will also be on the receiving end of a bad message. Now there will be a mix of the posture, facial expressions and the movements of their body will either make or break the message of the leader. When a good message is delivered it is hard for the leader to ruin their fortune with body language but it can be done. When a leader gets caught up with a bad question or message you will see with some people their body language “squirm” for either a fraction of a second or even a few seconds. The leader may show in their body language:

  • ·         A new facial expression
  • ·         A deep breath
  • ·         The skin may become read or the leader may become blush
  • ·         The leader may have a body part that starts shaking
  • ·         The hands may now be used somehow to block the message or the answer
  • ·         Verbally the leader may stutter or the real answer may even be revealed and then the body language follows

When a leader has to deliver a bad message they may show the signs of sympathy, their body movements may be slower, their facial features may show sorrow or frustration and or the body language of the leader may lose the appeal of confidence (sunk in shoulders, loss of the glide in the movements of the body)

Reading the body language of reactions to questions

When reading the body language of a leader you will see that leaders who have a bad message will flinch when a tough question is asked. The nonverbal communication of the leader may or will display just as it would when either getting or giving a good or bad message.

Reading body language of a liar leader
Reading body language of leaders who lie

Usually a well-trained leader will know that a difficult question will be asked of them at the worst time and they have practiced scenarios so that their body language will not betray them. A well trained leader will also have been taught about composure when things are going well for them so that their reaction in their body language does not come across as gloating or arrogance.

Reading the body language of a leader lying

Leaders who have made the mistake of lying in public and then have been caught wish that they would not have leaked their mistakes. There are some very specific things that people do when they lie:

  •           Touch their face
  • ·         Become flush or blush
  • ·         Cover their mouths after the lie or even try to shovel the words back into their mouths
  • ·         Rub their bodies after the lie. The face, head, arms, legs or even the neck
  • ·         Look another direction than what they were looking before
  • ·         Lose composure of confidence
  • ·         The blinking rate may increase

Now any of these actions for the body language of lying may happen by themselves of a few can work together in a cluster. This “cluster of lies” becomes evident as it happens for those who can read the signs and signals of liars or the body language of liars.

Watching a leader and looking at their body language can be an eye opening experience. You may want to watch to see if they are telling the truth or if they are lying. You may want to read the body language and nonverbal communications to tell if they would make a good leader. In your judgment remember that first you must watch them and baseline their actions to see what is normal vs abnormal and to also see if they are reacting to someone else.

Learning how to read body language like an expert may be easier than you would think.

Reading body language of fidgeting

Reading body language: In every day interactions people have beliefs about your nonverbal communication.

Things that we forget about as communicators just get stuck on auto pilot when it comes to our body language.

Hypnotist will point out that “you can feel your right big toe throb” because it is pointed out. Reading body language or controlling your nonverbal actions are similar to the example of what the hypnotist would tell you.

Reading body language of fidgeting and negative signs
Reading body language of fidgeting women

Fidgeting has to be one of the most common actions that gets picked up easy by a person who is viewing you as a communicator. While the person watches reads your body language they see your fidgets as:

  • ·         Nervousness
  • ·         Possible signs and signals you are lying
  • ·         Lack of self-control

Fidgeting can be:

  • Playing with your hair
  • Wringing your hands or being occupied with them or something in them
  • Playing with something in front of you or onyour clothes
  • Tapping the table

Reading the body language of fidgeting

Nervousness has many things that play out and fidgeting is one of them. Some people will play with their hands either rubbing them together or picking on their fingernails. The reasons that a person could be nervous may there is plenty of stress on the person or it is natural. There are some who just over time have started to fidget like some lick their lips.

Now for those who want to look at every body language sign and signal as a hotspot of someone lying this really may be one of those nonverbal actions that do point to someone not being truthful or that they are telling a lie.

Just because someone fidgets somehow it does not make them a liar remember it could be that they are just nervous.

Just for a second pretend that when you were stopped by the police for something but you don’t know why. You have not been in trouble in your life and you get hauled into the police station for a lineup for a crime that you didn’t commit. Would you be nervous? Yes you would be. Would you be fidgeting with something, your hands, your hair or even a piece of paper and a pen? That’s a good possibility. Would it be called for? Yes it would and it would almost be expected.

Now take an everyday example: You are at breakfast at a diner with a significant other and you are fidgety. Is this normal for you? Possibly, but what if the fidgeting wasn’t there? That could mean that something is going on that would need to be investigated more.

Just because someone has an action in their body language that can be read as bad does not determine for 100% that that they are doing the action that you believe.

Some say that when people are fidgety that it is an instant sign that they are lying. That could be the case if they are not a person who fidgets normally.

People under stress will fidget, people who are nervous will fidget and people who have a

natural action of fidgeting will fidget. Body language means to people what it does as the other persons actions happen, and that means if that person thinks that fidgeting is a “tell’ that you are lying then in their mind you are a liar.

The tough thing about reading body language is that so many people believe so many different things. If someone has read that fidgeting is a sure sign or “tell” that you are a liar then it is difficult to prove otherwise until the person learns that they are wrong and then accepts that their knowledge and skills of reading body language are flawed.

Reading body language for the sings of fidgeting
Reading body language of fidgeting for salespeople

Fidgeting on a date could signify to some that you lack confidence and do not deserve the person that you are with. Fidgeting on a job interview may mean that you are lying about your qualifications. Fidgeting with a significant other can mean that you are just being you.

Reading body language and good signs of fidgeting

If you are playing poker you can use fidgeting as a way to throw a “tell” so that the opponent may think that you don’t have a good hand. In this case fidgeting is a good thing for you to do if you think that as a strategy it will give you an upper hand between you and the other players.

Oh so you thought that all examples here would be negative. In just about everything there can be a positive and a negative including using fidgeting to your advantage.

Ok so you want another example where fidgeting could be good for you? That would be if you are buying something and you know that you have room to negotiate or maybe you think that you don’t have room to negotiate. When you as the buyer get to the end of the conversation of price for the product or service you would just be quiet and fidget for a minute and more than likely the salesman will lower the price if he doesn’t know or understand your game. In this case fidgeting can make you money or save you some.

Nervous signs of communication can sometimes be a good thing like in gambling or negotiating.

Go out and fidget the right way for your own personality but be aware that others can see it for something that it may not be.

Reading body language: What not to do with your hands

Reading body language: One of the largest mistakes people make when communicating is probably something that they would not ever think of off the top of their head.

Many times people have no clue as to what their hands are doing, where their hands are going. Even worse the Person who is under scrutiny has not idea what non-verbal message that they are delivering. While reading body language it is important to note that whatever the internal meaning of the body language is to the viewer that is their reality. The viewer thinks you are put off so they react. The viewer things you are interested so they act accordingly. There is plenty of room to be wrong in any instance when reading body language.

Super huge point: You can guess the wrong thing as to what body language is saying. Deciphering is not just the case of looking at just one picture and knowing instantly what the other person is thinking or feeling. You can read a situation wrong and it can be detrimental to whatever you are doing.

When it comes to you or someone else out in public where you can go wrong is by touching your face. If you are in sales it is absolutely imperative that you do not touch your face with your fingers. If it is possible using your shoulder or the back of your hand is recommended.

Just think of what this action says to your potential client whether they are reading your body language the right or the wrong way.

If you touch your nose for instance that person may be thinking “I hope he doesn’t try and shake my hand” instead of focusing on your sales message. This is just one way that your body language can hurt your abilities.

Another possibility is that the person who is reading your body language may think that you are fidgeting and may not be trustworthy. Now remember their reading of your body language has nothing to do with your intentions  just what they believe.

Pinocchio was this mythical creature that when he lied his nose grew. In many instances where people lie they start touching their face and you may or may not pick up on it subconsciously. This is a huge reason alone why you should not touch your face whether in a sales call or talking to a significant other.

Many times when people lie their body language will show through as they will try to either cover their mouth after lying or they will with motions try to put the words back into their mouths by making a cupping motion. In some instances the offender will actually use both of their hands and roll them over the top of each other.

Lastly some people will rub their necks as a result of a lie but this is not always the case the person may be under stress and the neck rubbing is how they deal with it.

As always I would like to thank you in advance for your comments and or questions.
